Gravity is your friend in the plumbing world and is the force at work in all drains. If you can, wait it out overnight and the water in the bowl will exert its own pressure on the blockage.
Gravity will often due the trick and then you can flush to see if it worked itself out.
Plunging, be gentle on the first plunge to clear the air from the plunger bell. Keep enough water in the bowl so that it is covering the plunger. Try to maintain a seal on the plunger and plunge it in and out. It may take some time, so be patient.
