Sewerhero Tip: Remove The Bathroom Sink Stopper
For many cases, if your bathroom sink is plugged, it may be in the stopper. The problem is caused by hair, toothpaste and soap scum that get caught on the stopper or pivot rod and plugs the drain. Today we will tell you how you can save money by checking the stopper instead of calling a drain specialist.

First, pull up on the stopper to see if it will come out, in most cases it will be locked in by the ball and rod. Secondly you’ll want to grab the stopper with one hand and reach under the sink with the other. Unscrew the pivot rod retaining nut and pull out the pivot rod to disengage it from the stopper. If you can’t loosen the nut by hand, use pliers or channel locks. If your sink is plugged and holding water, you may want to vacuum out the water from the sink, once rod is unscrewed, water may leak, so have a bucket or bowl under the sink just in case.
Now that the rod is disengaged from the stopper, you can now lift the stopper out of the sink and clean it over a garbage can. Grab a flashlight to look down the drain, there may be some build up. Use a coat hanger and bend it so it has a tight hook to grab the hair and debris.
When dropping the stopper back in the drain, it can get a bit tricky. Have the hole on the stopper facing toward the pivot rod’s location. Push the rod in fully without tightening, drop the stopper down until you feel restriction. Still holding on to the stopper, gently pull out the pivot rod and slightly lower stopper, push pivot rod back in and pull up on stopper to make sure rod locked into stopper hole. Hand tight pivot rod nut, Fill up sink to test with hot water, that flushes out any remaining debris. Check to see is nut is leaking, if it is, slightly tighten with pliers or channel locks. If bathroom sink is still plugged or slow, don’t hesitate to call Sewerheroes!
